by Jasmine L. Harris
Presented by: Sandra Pratt

You won’t want to miss this opportunity to meet and talk with the author, Jasmine L. Harris

Join us for an enlightening review of “Black Women, Ivory Tower” by Dr. Jasmine Harris, a groundbreaking exploration of the unique challenges faced by Black women in higher education. This event promises to be a vital conversation about the complexities of identity, belonging, and resilience in academic spaces where Black women are often seen as outsiders.

In recent years, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of Black women enrolling in colleges and universities, as well as teaching within these institutions. However, higher enrollment numbers do not automatically translate to safety or acceptance. Dr. Harris challenges the prevailing narrative by highlighting that the very structures of higher education can create environments where Black women feel like guests, rather than valued members of the academic community.

Through her personal experiences at Vassar, Dr. Harris candidly addresses the feelings of isolation and lack of agency that many Black women encounter. Her insights extend beyond mere statistics; she sheds light on the daily realities of navigating these academic spaces, the long-term professional consequences, and the generational impact on families.

Dr. Harris aims to empower Black girls and women with the knowledge she wished she had during her journey. By sharing her traumas and those of other Black women, she equips attendees with essential tools to navigate the complexities of higher education, ensuring they understand the challenges that may arise and how to overcome them.
