The Alchemist
by Paulo Coelho
Presented by: Jackie Rita, Brandon Johnson, Daniel Sebastian
In January, we will be hosting a special session in honor of Robert Schmidt, a beloved member of our faculty who recently passed away. Robert was the third faculty member to present a book during our Executive Book Review series, and he left a lasting impact on all of us. He loved The Alchemist and often quoted from it. His review of the book, held on May 7, 2017, was a meaningful reflection on the power of gratitude and the importance of relationships in our personal and professional lives.
During his presentation of the Alchemist, Robert shared two action items that continue to resonate:
1. Remember key career influencers: Take a moment to reflect on those who have had a profound impact on your career. Reach out to them and express your gratitude for the invaluable role they’ve played in your journey.
2. Thank your loved ones: Recognize and appreciate the loved ones who support you, both personally and professionally. Their presence in your life is vital, and expressing your gratitude can strengthen these essential relationships.
“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho is a transformative novel that has captivated millions of readers worldwide. With over twenty million copies sold and translated into more than eighty languages, it is one of the most translated books by any living author, cementing its place as a modern classic.
The story follows Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd, on his journey to discover a hidden treasure. Along the way, he encounters a series of challenges and learns valuable lessons about life, love, and purpose. Through his quest, Santiago uncovers the true treasures of the heart: the importance of following one’s dreams, trusting the wisdom within, and reading the signs and omens that life presents.
In “The Alchemist,” Coelho beautifully illustrates how our personal journeys—often filled with obstacles and detours—can lead us to self-discovery and fulfillment. The novel resonates deeply with those seeking purpose and meaning, offering timeless wisdom on how to listen to our hearts, remain resilient, and pursue our dreams with courage and conviction.
Join us for this special discussion of The Alchemist in honor of Robert Schmidt, who was deeply moved by the story’s message, as we celebrate Robert’s life and legacy which has had a profound impact on us all.
