THIS WILL BE A SPECIAL PRESENTATION BY THE AUTHOR
“I Shall Not Hate” by Izzeldin Abuelaish is a powerful and moving memoir that tells the story of a Palestinian doctor who, despite enduring immense personal tragedy, refuses to succumb to hatred and violence. Born and raised in the Gaza Strip, Abuelaish’s life was marked by both his medical career and his commitment to peace. He became known as the “doctor of peace” for his efforts to provide healthcare to both Palestinians and Israelis, working across the divide in a region fraught with tension and conflict.
The book centers around the unimaginable loss of his three daughters, who were killed in an Israeli missile attack in 2009. Despite the devastating grief of this loss, Abuelaish’s message is one of hope, forgiveness, and reconciliation. He expresses deep sorrow for the deaths of his children, but his overriding message is that hatred only perpetuates the cycle of violence, and the key to peace lies in compassion and understanding between people, regardless of their backgrounds.
Through his personal narrative, Abuelaish calls for an end to the cycle of violence that has plagued the Middle East for decades. He reflects on the challenges of growing up in Gaza, his journey to becoming a doctor, and his experience of losing his daughters, all while maintaining an unwavering commitment to peace. His story is not one of bitterness or revenge, but of the belief that humanity can transcend its divisions.
“I Shall Not Hate” is a deeply moving testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness. Abuelaish’s refusal to let hatred control his life offers a message of hope for a world that often seems overwhelmed by conflict. His story inspires readers to reflect on their own capacity for empathy, compassion, and reconciliation in the face of adversity.
