 n\nReconstruction in Texas was a complex and challenging time for Black Te
 xans. While Juneteenth\, the announcement of freedom\, brought hope\, it w
 as overshadowed by violence and hostility from white supremacists. Black c
 elebrations were met with killings and intimidation tactics.\n\nDespite th
 e dangers\, Black Texans sought to build new lives. However\, economic opp
 ortunities were scarce. The promise of land ownership (forty acres and a m
 ule) never materialized. Laws were passed to prevent Blacks from acquiring
  land\, while whites benefitted from the Homestead Act. This act solidifie
 d economic disparity between the races.\n\nThe legacy of Reconstruction in
  Texas is one of dashed hopes and continued racial oppression. Black Texan
 s' attempts to claim their freedom and economic security were thwarted by 
 a system rigged in favor of white supremacy.\n\nThe book review will be le
 d by Professor Mario Marcel Salas\, a civil rights leader\, author\, and p
 olitician from San Antonio\, Texas. Born in 1949\, he was active in the Ci
 vil Rights Movement as a young man and continues to fight for social justi
 ce today.\n\nSalas was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Com
 mittee (SNCC) and has championed various causes throughout his career\, in
 cluding the establishment of a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Texas state holi
 day. He is a retired professor of political science and currently a lectur
 er at UTSA. He is also the president of San Antonio Community Radio (KROV)
